Our History and Philosophy

A Brief History of Prog Palace Radio

Prog Palace Radio began in 1999 under a host of stations. In the beginning the station ddn't really have a name of it's own until a year later when it became The Prog Palace. It ran under that name for many years playing a variety of music within the progressive rock and metal genre. There were changes made over the years due to hardware failures. With these failures and having to rerip all the music to the station the format slowly began to change, add in that even though the station is just a hobby I wanted to give it a new name to show it was a radio station. It was then the name was changed to Prog Palace Radio and with the change the format slowly became what it is today.

Our Philosophy in Music

In starting an internet radio station there has to be a love for great music. In making this great music I believe that a single song doesn't show the bands full potential and I make every effort to provide the entire disc when available. By doing so you get to see all sides of the band as opposed to just a single so or two. I also noticed that some bands may have an entire album that plays out as a single song, but is broken up into different parts. This is simply due to the business side and is completely understandable, however as a listener I don't want to hear a 20 second intro that abruptly ends into another song from another band. To have music build and simply switch to another song wasn't something I wanted for the station. With this I decided that if there was an intro I'd combine it with the song that followed and play the music as it was intended originally. This created a small problem, the numbering would go from song 1 to song 3. In order to keep track of the songs these songs were renumbered to make it sequential.

This also created a challenge when it wasn't just intros that were part of a single song with many parts such as Dream Theater's "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" which has 8 tracks that make a single song and each song is part of the next song without any pause between them. In order for the station to play the song as it was intended the parts had to be combined into a single song. Not to mention once combined it would be a song just over 43 minutes long. In the progressive genre most everyone will agree that they love long songs and in most cases the longer the better. So the 8 parts were combined into a single song.

That philosophy continues today and with each new band I have to go through and make sure that there are no intros or songs that are meant to be a single track. With our huge list of artists and songs some of them are not always found before they are added to the playlist, but I am slowly going through our entire list of music to make sure that when you listen you will hear an entire song and not an intro. If you find that there is an intro that plays please let me know. I will review the songs and make the necessary changes.

I hope this makes us unique from other radio stations, enough to keep you listening. Remember Prog Palace Radio is my hobby, I do this for the love of music and sharing that music with all of you, our listeners. I spend a lot of time making sure you get the best progressive and power metal music I can find anywhere in the world.

If you are enjoying the station please help me with the costs of operation, your donation, however small is greatly appreciated.I'm not one to usually make this request, I believe that everyone should work for their money and earn it, however I am currently unemployed. As I seek new employment I have to ask for your help to keep the station operational.I take pride in what I do and how I do it and making this request does not come easy for me.

I thank you all for listening and if you have suggestions on improvements or bands/artists you'd like to see added to the playlist send me an email and I'll be happy to add it to our playlist. I only have one request, please make sure it falls within the genre of this station, progressive and/or power metal.

Thanks again for listening.
